REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON ‘CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN SPEECH, LANGUAGE AND HEARING SCIENCES IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION - 3rd - 4th May 2010’

INTRODUCTION
This conference aims to disseminate research, current developments and practices in the region focusing on a number of topics listed below. In recent years, more attention has been given to research in speech, language and hearing sciences, which are key areas in health and education. Since 2008, the British Council’s Prime Minister Initiative II has supported a research project on ‘Researching Syntactic Development for Malay and Chinese Children in Malaysia & Constructing Syntactic Assessment Tools for Speech & Language Therapy’. The project is a collaboration between the Speech Language Therapy Division, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, De Montfort University, UK and the Department of Audiology & Speech Sciences, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Findings of this research will be presented alongside with other research findings in the fields of Speech Sciences, Clinical Linguistics and Audiology in the region.

OBJECTIVES:

- to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners in the related fields to share their research findings.

• To facilitate discusssions among researchers and practitioners on best practices in research and clinical practice.

• To discuss possible effective treatment outcomes and provide update on development of tools and materials for clinical use.

Conference fees include conference program book, abstract book, stationery, and meals (morning break, lunch, and afternoon tea).



CONFERENCE DINNER

We are planning to hold a conference dinner which will be held on the first day of the conference i.e. 3rd May 2010. The venue has yet to be determined. But you could indicate in your e-mail to us if you would like to join the conference dinner. Estimated cost would be around RM100-150 (USD 30-50). We will confirm the actual cost soon.


PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP


’HANDS-ON PRACTICE ON A NEWLY DEVELOPED MALAY AND MANDARIN SYNTACTIC ASSESSMENT TOOL RESPECTIVELY FOR MALAY AND CHINESE CHILDREN IN MALAYSIA’

Date: 2nd May 2010. 9:00 am – 1 pm.

Venue: Hotel where conference will be held.



Participant Fee : RM200

Student Fee : RM100

The objective of the half-day workshop is to familiarize speech-language pathologists, undergraduate students in speech sciences, post-graduate students in clinical linguistics and related areas, teachers and academics with the Malay and Mandarin syntactic assessment tools respectively which has been developed out of the British Council Prime Minister Initiative II research grant .

Participants of workshop will be given a complimentary set of the developed syntactic assessment tool as part of the materials given in the workshop.

Abstracts should not be more than 200 words. Please use font Times New Roman size 12. List of references must follow the APA style.
